Fiber to the Home/Fiber to the Premise – FTTx

Fiber access technology, whether Fiber to the Home (FTTH) or Fiber to the Premise (FTTP), is generically referred to as FTTx. In its promise of a higher Quality of Service (QoS), as compared to other broadband access mediums, FTTx guarantees a minimum bandwidth level. Depending upon the splits in the network, an FTTx network can also deliver a higher level of maximum bandwidth and throughput as compared to other access mediums. All of this makes FTTx an optimal alternative for IPTV and “Triple Play” service as a Broadband technology.

Gigabit Ethernet Passive Optical Network (GEPON), or commonly referred to as Ethernet PON, is generally accepted as the most effective transport architecture or variant of PON technology. It provides a seamless integration with the IP/Ethernet core network. UTStarcom, as part of its technology innovation history, launched the world’s first GEPON network in 2005. UTStarcom was also the world’s first vendor to integrate Layer 2 and Layer 3 functionality in its GEPON offering. UTStarcom’s GEPON portfolio delivers high-speed voice, data and video services to both residential and business subscribers. The platform, comprising both Optical Line Terminal (OLT) and Optical Network Unit (ONU), represents a high-speed FTTx solution and an alternative or adjunct to xDSL access.

GEPON solutions combine the simplicity of Ethernet service provisioning with the high durability of passive components, ensuring lower operating expense (OPEX) for service providers. The GEPON platform is an extremely cost-effective alternative to conventional access equipment, reducing points of failure and maintenance spend and effectively simplifying network architecture.

GEPON assures the user a much higher QoS guarantee. The cost of fiber and its deployment expense has also been lowered quite substantially recently, making the service much more cost-effective from both the subscriber and operator perspective. FTTx, or GEPON in particular, supports multiple applications and services including VoIP, enterprise focused services, “Triple Play” services and RF Overlay, among others.
