RF Overlay
With UTStarcom’s RF overlay solution, cable operators (MSOs) are able to provide IPTV service to subscribers. By utilizing UTStarcom’s GEPON OLTs in the network, MSOs are able to provision a network capable of supporting all types of video services:
- Analog broadcast
- Digital broadcast and HDTV
- Video on demand (VOD)
MSOs transport the video signals through a separate fiber network to the Central Office, where they are coupled with data traffic and then transported through the same optical network link. The service provider can then deliver video content in the same format that standard cable TV or satellite providers use.
The solution takes advantage of economies of scale and provides equivalent video functionality without the need to modify wiring or any other part of the home network. Also, the solution provides fiber access to the customer promises (FTTH/FTTP) and EPON based data access with a guarantee of 30Mbps. Voice services are also provided over the EPON link.
The solution is excellent for Greenfield fiber deployments as well as general fiber access as it provides higher guaranteed bandwidth for triple play applications in a hybrid fiber coax network based upon the CableLabs® standard DOCSIS.
