Class 4 PSTN Emulation (C4 PES)
“The solution for Toll/Tandem”
When VoIP applications were originally deployed, service providers believed that IP-based applications would be primarily applicable for PRI offload and toll arbitration. And actually, one of the initial business drivers for IP telephony was toll by-pass.
However, with time, operators have discovered that by using a softswitch alternative to their existing legacy tandem and class 4 switching applications they can actually reap an array of benefits that can only be attained through VoIP architectures. They can build simpler and less complex networks that are easier to manage, operate and deploy. Their move to IP-based networks has opened a world of possibilities for new services and applications which in the past were unattainable with their legacy systems.

The UTStarcom mSwitch® Class 4 PSTN Emulation solution enables carriers to replace their current legacy tandem switches with a leading edge IP-based class 4 platform. The Class 4 PES helps meet the needs of the operators whose business plans require them to cap their existing tandem network and then expand using IP or those that are looking to deploy a new tandem network. The mSwitch Class 4 PSTN Emulation solution features a unique architecture that facilitates trunking and signaling control. The primary components of this solution are the mSwitch Call Server (CS-P), the Trunking Gateway (TG) and the Signaling Gateway (SG). Their functions are to handle calls originating in one network and terminating in a different network. Specifically, it provides a full duplex inter-networking function between SS7 and IP protocols.
